Not every great restaurant is easy to find. Bird Dog Bistro is tucked inside Captain Walter Francis Duke Regional Airport in California, Maryland, and that's exactly the point.
We opened in 2022 with a simple but bold idea: this airport deserved a restaurant worth the trip. Not a vending machine. Not a snack counter. A real bistro with a rotating menu built around fresh ingredients, a full coffee bar, and a dining room that gives you a front-row seat to the runway.
We named ourselves after the Bird Dog and not just the loyal, relentless hunting dog bred to find what others walk past. The name is also inspired by the Cessna O-1 Bird Dog, a legendary observation aircraft known for its ability to scout ahead, spot opportunities, and go places others couldn't. That combination of persistence, vision, and determination felt right. We set up shop somewhere nobody expected a great meal to be, and we've been proving the skeptics wrong ever since—finding our own path, staying focused on what matters, and always pushing forward.

A Fly-In Restaurant Southern Maryland Didn't Expect
Our dining room overlooks an active airfield. Watch small planes taxi, take off, and land while you eat lunch — it's the kind of thing that turns a Tuesday into a story worth telling. Locals come for the food and stay for the view. Pilots fly in because the food is worth the fuel.
A Menu That Keeps Moving
We don't believe in a menu that sits still. Our kitchen combines traditional preparations with local ingredients and rotates weekly specials to keep things fresh — familiar enough to feel like comfort, interesting enough to keep you coming back.
A Full Coffee Bar
Southern Maryland needed a coffee bar worth sitting in. We built one. Whether you're a black coffee purist or a latte person, we're pulling shots and steaming milk Tuesday through Saturday starting at 10am. Come early, grab a coffee, and watch the runway while you work. There are worse offices.
Open to Everyone
Fly in. Walk over. Bike in. Drive up. However you get here, there's a seat for you. We serve the Pax River workforce, St. Mary's County locals, aviation enthusiasts, weekend visitors, and anyone who heard about us and made the drive to find out if it was true.
